Embattled Edgewood Mayor Audrey Jarmaillo, who was recently ousted from her position with the gavel – the legality of which still remains in question – has withdrawn her candidacy for a return to the commission.
“The threats were not going to stop,” Jaramillo said of her decision which comes after filing her candidate paperwork last week. “They were making it clear the family name would be drug through the mud and it was going to get a lot worse.”
Fellow commissioners Jerry Powers, who is now running unopposed in District 2, and Filandro Anaya orchestrated Jaramillo’s removal in a special meeting in August, claiming she changed the verbiage in minutes, micro-managed Town Hall employees and possibly violated the state’s Sunshine Laws regarding information requests.
Jaramillo once again denied those allegations and said she has no plans to go anywhere until her term expires at year’s end.
“I have a lot of evidence that the accusations are false accusations,” she said, adding, “I am standing strong as far as the legal mayor and will be serving through Dec. 31. And I am always here for Edgewood.”
To help the commission to continue to be a viable entity for the remainder of the term, Jaramillo said she is seeking mediation through the town’s insurance fund.
In other candidate news, Powers had originally been opposed by Holly Christine Jaramillo, but her candidacy was disqualified by the Torrance County clerk’s office because it was determined she did not meet eligibility qualifications in terms of registering and residence.
And Edgewood Commissioner Sterling faces one less challenger when Douglas West withdrew from consideration.
In Moriatry, W. Brent Myrick was disqualified for city councilor at large position because he did not meet eligibility requirements.
As for additional candidates, Windie Marie Burns is seeking a seat on the Moriarty-Edgewood School District Board for District 5. Burns is a Bernalillo County resident.
